Day 31
6 miles

Fastest mile:  9:49
Slowest mile:  10:19

Rough go this morning.  Rough.  Rough.  Rough.

Total mileage for May:  156 miles.  Thats an average of 39 miles a week.

The moral of the story is:  Don't stop when you're tired.  Stop when you're done.

Day 30
2.25 miles ran
No watch
30 mins of swimming lap; a friend gave me his key card to his pool while he's out of town this weekend as his pool is MUCH longer and the lap length was awesome.  Twas greatness!

Legs and body were tired.  Yesterday was a looooooooong day with the early morning run, then Memorial Day activities out in the sun with friend out in Clear Lake.

The run-o-meter just hit 150 miles for the month of May.

1 more day....1 more day.... :o)

Saturday, May 29, 2010

6am start

8 miles (decided to stick to the schedule with the 40% cut back on the long run distance this week instead of doing the full route given to us which was a 10 mile route)
Fastest mile: 9:18 (mile 8)
Slowest mile: 10:26 (mile 1)

Average pace: 9:54

I'm loving this...This is actually my goal marathon pace for Chicago, and hopefully its going to be a lot cooler come October up there...I've just got to be able to do this for 26.2 pace should be a lot slower than goal MP, but I will take GMP anytime it shows up on Saturday mornings.  :o)

Next Saturday its back to long mileage:  15 miles.

Slept late.
Ran 3 miles.
Saw Sex and the City 2!!!
Now home resting for my short long run in the morning.  Schedule calls for 8, route is 10.  Probably just going to run the 10 miles...last week was 14, so 10 works for me just as easily as 8 :)

28 days ran in May
3   days left to run in May...
Almost there...

...and on the 27th day...

4 miles

Slowest mile: 9:56
Fastest mile:  9:42

Whaaaat?  Dang.  Must have been all the shade in the rich peoples neighborhood and the smooth, smooth sidewalks.  I decided to run right through River Oaks today, staying off the main roads.  Its an easy reach for me from my house to the rich side of the tracks, so I took the shortcut over there missing a lot of the stop and go of too many crossings of traffic and stop lights.

And to think, I didn't want to run at all.
4 days left to run and TOMORROW is Sex and the City 2 for me!!!!!!!!!  Me and a HUGE small bag of popcorn...

p.s. the 2fer didnt happen...I didnt sleep well last night, so when the alarm went off at 5am I said "screw that"...and didnt get up till 6:10 :)
I know that the majority of the 'crabs' in  my life don't even read this blog...but when and if they ever do...

You're all being picked off one by one out of there...out of my bucket, out of my life in any capacity other than a mere 'aquaintance' at best...

For those of you who may not be familiar with this little story...
You see...and I am repeating this as it was told/explained to me...

Whenever you have a bucket, with a crab in it (that me (or you possibly), then that crab can get out of the bucket if he/she so chooses...go upward and onward to new things and new heights!

However, you add a bunch of other crabs in the bucket with you, and try and get out; just try it...every single time, one of the other crabs or more than one of them will reach up and bring you back won't ever get out (or up) with a bunch of crabs always bringing you down...

I'm just about down to my last couple of crabs I think...

OK, so blogger will not let me save posts as drafts, so I guess I will blog over my 'vacation' after all...

6 miles

Not bad (drier air is always good and also welcome here along the Gulf Coast!) and it was overcast.  Still sweaty as a pig though at the end.

Slowest mile:  10:16
Fastest mile:     9:26

Going to go for a 2fer tomorrow...2 miles before work, 4 miles after work.

What Do YOU Care About Today?

Back on My Feet - Program for helping the Homeless
As someone who use to run by COUNTLESS homeless shelters when I lived downtown, this story really hit home for me...Every day I encountered mostly waves and you go girl! shouts from the homeless either sitting outside smoking a cigarette or chatting up their buddies...
I was never afraid of them, not once.  I have never had anxiety about it, while friends and family always worried about me...
Anyway I found this story extremely interesting and because of it I am going to see about a Back on My Feet program here in Houston...If we dont have one yet, we should.

Eat This, Not That...

Had to share this...One of my favorite segments on The Today Show every week...
Information people, only information...not that I think I'm better than anyone else due to my food choices, just sharing information (disclaimer due to body slam I took on Facebook today for telling people about Pop Tart ice cream sandwiches).  Still amazes me that in restaurants, such as Cheesecake Factory there are 'seemingly' non-offenders of entrees, only to find out its 2500 calories...whaaat???

Tuesday, May 25, 2010

As of 4pm on Thursday, I will be off work until June 2nd.  In lieu of that, I am starting my 'departure' early...

I have gym night tonight, then of course running right on through May 31st, but the blog itself will be dark unless I get the urge to post something.

Schedule is as follows:
tonight:  gym - 4 miles treadmill
wed:     6 miles
thurs:    4 miles
fri:        3 miles
sat:       8 miles (cut back long run week)
sun:      3 miles
mon:     6 miles

If I hit all of these numbers which I dont know why I wouldnt, that will give me 156 miles for the month of May.

Thats a lot yo.

Y'all be safe and sound out there on the roads this holiday weekend.

We'll see ya on the flip side of May :o)

Make You Laugh!!!!

I don't know why, but I thought this was HISS. STAIR. A. CAL.  Really?  Let's see how far we can run on top of water?  You really have to watch the whole thing...Just past the 2:00 min mark, one guy really gets going...

OK, and this one is no kidding either...

This is not the same guy as in the video, but he's a on a 'joggling' streak of to be over 1,000 days of running...and I thought me running every day in May was tough :o) ... at least I'm not juggling while I do it!!!
Marathons and ultra marathons all the while juggling???  KA. RAZY.

Days run in May: 24
Days left to run in May: 7
Days left to a 5 day weekend (AND the SATC movie premiere!) 3!!!

Start time: 5:50pm

Distance:  6 miles
Paces between 9:28 and 10:16

Very warm out there today and to be honest I pondered only doing 3-4 miles.  I picked my old standby route to Rice, around and back knowing that I would have mostly shade and that might help.  Just really tired today and I really wanted to go slow.  Like 10:30 slow but as you can see that didnt happen.

Glad I did the 6 miles though...really, really glad.

Days left to a 5 day weekend (AND the SATC movie premiere!) 4

Start time: 10:30am

Paces: 9:43/9:38/9:36

Drove home from Mom's fairly early and instead of waiting till late afternoon (when its supposed to get up to 95 today), I decided to just get out there.  I contemplated just doing the mile to get the day in of running, but I thought "you know I feel good and yeah its hot, but take the G2 and just go ahead and get 3 in for the day.

Now its swim time!!!

Kenyan Way - Long Run - 14 miles

Days run in May: 22
Days left to run in May: 9
Days left to a 5 day weekend (AND the SATC movie premiere!) 5

Start time:  5am

Total mileage: 14 miles
Average pace: 10:16

It was more like swimming than running...brutal, brutal, brutal.  When your clothes are so completely soaked through that the sweat is running down your legs and arms as if you were in the shower, it makes for a more mental than physical challenge.  I am pleased with the pace I ended up with, holding back early on because I knew around mile 12 I would be struggling, and that is exactly what happened.  That mile was along the bayou on the Memorial side with a big ass hill in it, and I just lost it there for a bit.  The thing was I was still passing people...people were walking and they were only in mile 8 of the route.  I was in mile 12, so that helped me mentally.  They were struggling and I was 4 miles ahead of them :)

What sucked even more was having to walk up about 3 flights of stairs about 1/2 way through the route (which was 8.5 miles this morning)...having to lift your body up all those stairs at that point was not fun.  Thankfully once you got to the top, the route went down a steep hill straight to the water stop...

I need to figure out how to wear less clothes than I already do...  :)  I wore the tiniest shorts I have along with the tiniest top I have and it was still unbearable...why can't we run naked?

Thankfully next week is a cut back week on the long run...I am SOOOO looking forward to that!!!

Easy 4 miler today.  I have to say that today was the first day I almost did not run.  Just wasn't a great day all the way around (its been a heck of a week honestly).  Wait, I take that back.  I did have lunch at Los Cucos today and that was yummy!  And who knew they actually had 4 healthy food options (in addition to the yummy grilled shrimp or fish tacos?)  Not me!  I always just get either one of those.  But today I strayed and went for one of the newer items and it was ok.  I prefer the shrimp or fish though :)  Everyone just gives you so much food!  I ate half and brought the rest back to work with me.  Guess I will have that for lunch tomorrow since I went and left it in the refrigerator.  :(

This was by far the slowest short mileage day I have had in quite some time, but that was by design.  Average pace between 9:54 and 10:14.

As a side note, I've been carrying my little 10oz handheld (have I mentioned that already in a previous post?)...anyway, I've been carrying that with G2 in it and it certainly helps!  All but one of my routes are water fountain shy, and with the heat/humidity I need the hydration.

Saturday looks to be the worst (in the way of weather) day we've had this season.  And I have 14 miles on tap.

le sigh.

Don't Tell Me Running Is Bad for Me!!! Or For You Either!!!

Me. Woman.
You. Man.
Baby we WERE born to run!

See for yourself!

Days run in May: 19
Days left to run in May:12
Days left to a 5 day weekend (AND the SATC movie premiere!) 8

Start time:  5:00pm (I started early because I knew I wanted to swim afterwards and I didnt want it to be late getting in after all of it).

I dont know what the temps etc., were when I started because I didnt look, but when I finished 6 miles, the temp said 89deg, so I am gonna guess that it was maybe 91 when I started with the sun beating down on me big time.  I did a 4 mile loop before stopping off at the house to get some water.  Then I set off for a mile loop, stopped at home again, got more water and did one more 1 mile loop.

Came inside, toweled off the massive amounts of sweat, put on my swimsuit and jumped in the pool for 20 min of laps.  I would freestyle swim one lap, swim one lap on my back.  Repeat.  After 2 sets, I would rest a few, let the HR drop and go again.

For feeling as lethargic as I did today (thanks to TOM), it was a good workout and I approached the run nice and easy.  I was about a block from home before I realized I didnt have the Garmin on, so I just ran by feel and used the lights at major intersections as my 'rest'.

Peace and Happy Running!

Days run in May: 18
Days left to run in May: 13
Days left to a 5 day weekend (AND the SATC movie premiere!)  9

This is no longer challenging.  Running every day is not so hard; either that or I just got use to it a lot quicker than I thought I would.  Oh hell, lets be honest.  I didn't ever think I would get use to it.  Oh well, 13 days to go.

Today was gym day.

4 miles - treadmill
weights - upper body.  Had to take it a bit easy on the back as I pulled something this morning simply reaching for something and at the same time a big sneeze.  Bamm!  Pulled something.
1 mile - treadmill

I broke up the 5 miles because honestly running on the treadmill has become something I just have a hard time staying focused on and it seems mundane.  Plus I have become one of those people that I use to get grossed out by; you know the ones that has sweat all over the machine when you're done...I use to wonder just how in the heck people sweat like that inside on a I know :o)  And yes, I wipe/clean it off after I'm done :o)

Good news is that for the past 2 days I have had ZERO pain in the left foot, so I think my plantar might be under control.  Still going to roll/ice it here in a bit.  Can't hurt right?

No, I'm not lying :o)  I do believe we are so close to the edge of what we normally experience here in the Summer that its not even funny...Soon it will be 80deg at 6am when we start out Saturday runs...Thankfully the cloudy skies moved in (and I heard thunder rumbling from about mile 3 to home) so that made it a bit more bearable.

6 miles
paces between 9:36 and 10:04
I gotta tell ya, sometimes these 7/1's are just what the doctor ordered.  I felt really, REALLY good today on this run and kept my HR in check and never felt like I was pushing too much.

Heres a cute I was coming back down Hazard during the last 1.5 miles I saw this guy up ahead of me about 300m I would guess.  Before I knew it I was up on him as we got to Bissonett at the light and he seemed startled that I had caught him (he had turned his head back once and saw me when I was about 100m from him)..the light in front of us was red but he took off across the street and I had to laugh...knowing what he was thinking.  I looked at my watch and saw that I had 20sec till my next walk interval so I ran out the 20sec and walked the minute watching him trudge along ahead of me.  Once my watch ticked off to run I figured he was about 150m ahead of me again.  I just started running knowing full well I was going to 'chick' him again...he turned once again to 'see where I was' and I was right up on him by that time and he took off like a shot.

For about 50m and that was all he had?  Laugh.  He actually started walking and I just flew right by him.  Poor guy.  I must have ruined his day :)

Sorry about your luck dude.

I did not have a good day today in the way of some mental issues.  Some revolve around my mom's situation, some revolve around other things, and then some revolving around my incessant thoughts about eating/food...I don't know if any of this had anything to do with the constant empty feeling I had in my stomach all day, but I am here to tell you that I had to fight like hell to not completely just keep eating and eating.  And the fact that I couldn't stop thinking about food was making me even more mad.

I had to literally talk to myself (not out loud, but more in a manner of praying) my head telling myself 'you are NOT hungry', 'you are NOT hungry'...I couldnt be...I was eating PLENTY of food...Even though I brought ALL my food from home today, just before lunch I went down to the cafeteria for some stuff off the salad bar:  carrot sticks, cucumbers, garbanzo beans.  Things that I can 'pick' at, but with extremely low caloric impact, through out the afternoon.

Maybe its the increase in activity over the weekend?  I dont know...All I know is that it was (and still is) a struggle...and then with all the other 'stuff' it just made it that much harder...

And last but not least...the triathlon at the end of June?  Not going to happen.  And not because I wouldnt still like to do it, but I commited this morning to working that Sunday; so instead of spending $65 to do that race, I will be pocketing much more than that to work for 5 hours ;o)  I am picking up some shifts here and there during the summer to help out at one of our local specialty running stores, and to pocket the extra cash to help subsidize my Chicago Marathon trip in October!  Lets face it, I dont make the same kind of money I use to, and I have to be frugal when need be.

My plan though is to continue to swim 2-3 times a week because I do love the thought of swimming even if I suck at it (but I do look good in my bathing suit ;o), and to do a 'brick' workout every Sunday that I possibly can...Simply because its a great workout, and keeps me active on that day where I might be otherwise inclined to just be a slug the day after my long run!

I don't understand people.

Those people that a) are always wishing it was Friday already and b) wish Mondays didnt exist.

Do you realize that when you do that you are wishing your life away?  Why don't people rejoice in the fact that EVERY SINGLE DAY is a gift from God?

We're in the BLACK now!  More days run than I have left!

This morning...I had plans to do my first 'brick' in a long time...I havent even been on my bike so attempting a brick was a bit daunting...I had a late night...not a lot of hydration either...and I hadnt eaten anything of substance since about 6:30pm last night...unless you count a bite of pizza crust and an Oreo :)

So off I go...10 miles on the bike...a bit windy for my liking but go, go, go I did...I had my racers on, bike shorts and a bike shirt.  Bike went ok.  Was still early enough that there werent many cars on the road yet; I just rode to Rice, did a couple of loops and back...get the bike in the house and I contemplated changing into running shorts but figured 'why?' off I went...the 'fast' transition reminded me just how difficult it is to get going on a run after a bike...its one mile girl...go, go, go...

And then it was over.  Done.

Humbled yet again.

And now I sit here, writing this, shoving an egg white omelet and veggie sausage patties (2) into my piehole...the hunger was almost unbearable...I didnt eat right after, but yet, jumped in the shower and off to Fiesta for a few staples I dont buy at WFM.

Swimming later as the sun looks like its finally going to show its face today after 2 days of much needed rain.

Kenyan Way Long Run

Days run in May: 15
Days left to run in May: 16
Days left to a 5 day weekend (AND the SATC movie premiere!) 12

70 deg
98% humidity
74 deg dewpoint

We had A LOT of rain last night, so the email came through late last night that the route was going to be changed...the bayou was just going to be too much of a mess...the only good thing about the change in route was that now it was going to be flat, flat, flat.  I wasnt looking forward to another hilly run this weekend!

I started with mileage before the group start of 6am since the route today was only 7.25 miles and I needed 13 miles.  And yeah, I could run them after the route, but that is so much harder.  The bad part about running before and then stopping to wait till group start is that sometimes its a bit harder for me to get going again.

With several of my tried and true compadres not there today, one of two things was going to happen.  1) I would run slower and that would be ok or 2) I would start out slower (which we never do it seems) and then be able to really bring it home as it should be.

What happened you ask?

I killed it!  I ran 5 miles before the start, making the decision to do the extra mile to put me with less time in between that and the start with the group.  We heard that more thunderstorms were on the way, so Erin, Megan and I took off without waiting for our group to start.  I went ahead of them within the first mile, as conversation pace was not something I really wanted this morning.  I wanted to fall in with the 4 hour group and see how long I could hang on.  I held on quite nicely thank you VERY much.  Training pace for the 4 hour group goes up to like 10:15 pace I think it is...and my average pace came in at 9:52.  This my friends is faster than any 1/2 marathon (and of course every marathon) I have ever run.  With my PR in  Dallas at the half, my average pace was 10:01 (unfortunately) so if this had been a 1/2 this morning I would have PR'd big time!  Whooop!

And yeah, right now, hours later, I am feeling the effects, but I havent pushed myself like that.  I figure it wont always be like that, so I have to take advantage of the long run days when I feel especially good and put some oomph in there ... everyone was complaining about how humid it was, but um...yeah, its Houston, and its ALWAYS going to be like that was just a bit worse with the ickiness of last night storms and the impending ones that were on the way.  Otherwise it was PERFECT weather for us this time of year.  At least the sun wasnt beating down on us!

So I got my 13 miles in...I ran with a group I have never ran with before, and I feel damn good about that!  I dont know what next weekend will bring.  14 miles next weekend.  And I havent even STARTED official Chicago training yet! Ha!  I am hoping for another stellar run next weekend!

Its thunderstorming now...and I am kinda happy about that...makes it easier to be a slug the rest of the day :)  Hoping for better weather tomorrow as I really want to get a few miles in on the bike before my itty bitty 1 mile run :)

Happy running!!!

Pre-Long Run Day Eats and a New Poll (I need your help!)

Breakfast:  taco (beans, egg, potato, cheese)  I always allow myself a scrummy breakfast taco on Fridays; the ones at the cafeteria at work are huge, and I can't allow that sort of thing more than once a week!  Usually I also allow myself to have the fattening sausage in it, but well, not the case least not for a while.
Snack:       Gala apple
Lunch:      Spinach, steamed broccoli and a scoop of mashed taters :)  I like Fridays because I get to serve myself which today resulted in a LOT of yummy spinach!  Those servers can be sometimes greedy with the veggies!!!
Snack:       1/2 nanner and some PB
Dinner:     Went to Spaghetti Western (one of my favs!); had THREE slices of veggie pizza; brought the rest home!

So I had goals to do more tri's and du's this year, but then well...then came the Chicago decision...and then there was all the racing and the running and the racing...And it was cold and I couldnt swim and I didnt want to bike either, cause it was cold... :o) ... Anyway, I am obviously running a lot, just started back swimming and it feels 'good' ... better than before ... and so just when I thought I was going to give up on any tri's or du's this year after all...I started thinking about the Freedom Tri (that I was planning on doing all along) ... and whether or not I could/should still just go ahead and do it...?  I havent had any bike time, but I have time...if I want to...yeah it will be tough to also bike at least 2 times a week...and then the swimming too...oh and all the running ... So .... that brings me to needing your help!!!

Its a sprint tri (been there done that):  300m swim, 12 mile bike, 3 mile run; the swim is a pool swim, so I think I could do better at that (I paniced last year in the open water swim and ended up doing the 300yds pretty much back stroking it :O)

What do you think? Comments are encouraged as well! I need reasons as to why or why not???

I hope that tomorrows 13 miler goes ok.  Weather looks brutal, with rain forecast; maybe we'll get lucky and it will hold off till after we're done.

Nice and overcast which made it bearable.

I am not gonna lie...This morning when I woke up and just 'thought' about running today, I wanted to give up like Lauren trying to talk sense into Heidi on not having another boob surgery to get them to a size H.  You know..."you know, for (H)eidi.  Whatevs.

Seriously.  That's how I felt.  So during our weekly meeting at work, my mind was racing...not like racing as in running...because even my mind is tired of running, let alone racing :o) ... So anyway, I set about (in my head) trying to come up with how I could handle these next 2 days before my long run on Saturday (which is 13 miles).

I could just run 1 mile today, 1 mile tomorrow.  Or I could stick to the plan and do 4-5 today, 1 tomorrow.  Or I could not run at all and totally lie about it on here.  : p

So after the meeting I got onto as I figured maybe a new route/loop would help me and I certainly think it will!  I liked my new route the other night so I wondered if I ran part of that, how much mileage would that be?  Whoop!  2 miles! Well, 1.97 miles, but I ran past the starting point just to make sure I got my 2 miles in :)  Average pace:  9:58

So that's what I did tonight. 2 miles.  Not quite what I should have done, but more than just what I really wanted to do (which was ZERO)...

AND I then changed into my 'ok its cute enough' one piece swimsuit (for training) and popped into the swimming pool for some laps!

30 min of lap swimming. It bears repeating:  I am in much better shape on the swimming thing this year!  Makes me happy!

I's no quitta.

Breakfast:  2 scrambled eggs
Snack:       Overnight oats (sliced strawberries)
Lunch:       Care-wots (thats carrots, ok people)  :o), steamed broccoli, rice, cabbage
Snack:       bag of 100 calorie plain popcorn
Another Snack:  1/2 of a 'nanner
Dinner:      Amy's Veggie burger patty on a sandwich thin, sprouts, olives, avocado, mustard, crumbled feta
                 10 tater tots :)

I have never run on these legs more than um...maybe 5 days in a row?  6 maaaaaaaaybe...All I know is that my legs are tired.  I have never put them through this before.  Every day I get up and I going to be able to do this?  Make it 'x' number days left???

45 min on the treadmill
1hour 15 min on weights

Breakfast:  taco (beans, egg, cheese, green picante sauce)
Snack:  banana
Lunch:  raw veggies and a cheese sammich  :o) (thats for you Bill!)
Snack:  green beans.  yes I said green beans.  Hey the body wants what the body wants. :o)  Thankfully the ala carte line in the cafeteria had them today :o)
Dinner: Amy's Veggie Burger, had it a la naked (i.e. no bread); topped with sprouts, sauteed fresh spinach, mustard, kalamatas and a slice of cheeeeeeeeeeese!  Served with roasted asparagus and care-wots!  Scrummy de-lish!

That was horrible.  With not enough water in me this morning after sleeping all night and then about 14 hours since the last run, I should have known better.  No where on the route was there water and this about killed me.  I thought about asking these one landscapers for water but I didnt see a cooler on their truck so I just kept going...

Later in the afternoon, I got back in the pool!  The water is finally warm enough :)  I have of course lost some swimming fitness since training for last years tri, but I have to say I was a lot better off starting this year as opposed to last year!  I credit that to improved all around fitness from my running and diet.  I only did about 14 laps...just enough to get my feet wet again.. no pun intended .. I dont want to wake up all sore tomorrow from the change in muscle movements.  My plan is to swim at least 3 times a week in the evenings after running.

Now if I could just get myself back on the bike...Maybe on Sunday.  Run, swim AND bike...hmmmm... we'll see how that works out.

Also been doing abs again.
Last night: 120 crunches
Tonight: 120 crunches

Breakfast (pre-run): PBJ on a sandwich thin
Snack (post-run): tuna fish (no bread, no crackers, nada)
Lunch:  bad move waiting till 2:30 to eat.  Tuna fish on sandwich thin; with a piece of pepper jack cheese!!!  and added some yummy kalamata olives and sprouts too!
Snack: 1 rice cake/1tbsp PB
Dinner: sushi!  spicy tuna rolls...mmm mmm good!

Days left to run in May: 21

Mileage: 5 miles
Did 7/1's
Pace varied from 9:12 to 9:49

I mapmyrun'd out a different route today and I have to say varying up the routes these days really seems to help.  Plus it helps to run through some of these back streets because I can run on the side of the road with the shade :o)

Breakfast: 2 scrambled eggs
                1 piece of toast/smidge of butter/grape jelly
Snack:      Orange/4 whole wheat crackers
Lunch:      1 can of tuna fish (tossed with green onion, pepper flakes, a smidge of no fat sour cream and a couple of squirts of regular mustard
                1/4 c of mashed avocado
                6 whole wheat crackers
Snack:      Overnight oats w/4 fresh strawberries chopped in
Dinner:      Not hungry right now, but I figure its going to be leftover couscous and roasted veggies that I fixed last night.

Sorry if the cataloging of what I eat is boring, but as with anything, if I write it down (especially here on this blog), then I will hold myself accountable for the outcome of making bad food choices.

I finally am making progress on the scale again (on Saturday I was down almost 14 lbs), inching closer and closer to that ever glorious weight goal, which I guess I should go ahead and post the goal here:  109.9; and if I hit 108, then I wouldnt like, you know, slash my wrists or anything out of disappointment.

I'm just sayin'.

More and more I am finding that the whole no meat during Lent thing really changed me...Now whenever I do eat any meat, as I have said before it really does a number on me if I am not careful (this doesnt seem to apply when I eat seafood though).  Again yesterday...when I got to Moms I was starving and I didnt know when we were (or if we were) going to go eat.  There was a piece of sausage (I am guessing something like Eckrich) in the refrigerator and I grabbed it and scarfed it down.  Bad choices have repercussions and I should never have let myself be susceptible to such ickiness that is an Eckrich sausage...

For the rest of the day and night, I just felt awful on the inside.  Felt fat, bloaty and just overall gross.

I was disappointed at the restaurant we went to (Hofbrau), that since my new ways of eating, didnt offer any kind of vegetarian plate option.  So I had to make do with ordering ala carte which was fine I guess.  I just ordered a baked potato ( on the skinny side ) and some grilled veggies...Oh and I had a handful of fried mushrooms...hey it was a family dinner!  They were yummy!

On a side note, yes Mom finally got to come home (Saturday), but I am not entirely convinced this was the smartest thing to do...I guess only time will tell...It was very draining yesterday and I was only there for a few short hours...its like babysitting to be completely honest with you...I dont know how my sister is surviving.  She is truly my hero...I could never hold a candle to her.  Never.  Ever.  I am going to go back in a couple of weekends to actually stay all night and hopefully give my sister a well deserved break so maybe her and the hubby can go do something fun!

This was at 5:00am

12.5 miles total
4 before the 6am start (5:10am start)
7.5 which was today's route
1 mile around base

Average pace:  10:14

Todays route of 7.5 had a little bit of everything...pavement, bike path, big rocks, hills, 2 sets of stairs (1 up; 1 flight, 1 down; 3 flights), wood shavings, and bat shit :)  That's cross country if I have to call it something :)

The big rocks section thankfully only accounted for maybe 1/2 mile and it did a number on my feet (plantar in left heel suffered the most)...

Overall I am happy with the result...thankfully we had full cloud coverage and a stiff wind to keep it relatively manageable.  I went too fast on a couple of miles here and there, and that bit me in the booty there in the last mile of the route, but other than that, yeah...

Waiting until 6pm indeed made a difference...I think...maybe it was just a better day for other reasons, I dont know...but...

I had intended on having a gym day today, where I would get in an hour of running on the treadmill (along with some lifting), but with me not getting out of bed in time, and not wanting to be late for work so I just said screw it...I will run outside, but will make it a tad bit later than 4:30 in the afternoon!!!  Not that running at 6pm is much different than running at 4:30, but at least there, because of my usual route, is a bit more shade at times than usual.

I didn't feel like running the route to Rice and then adding on at the end as I did one day last week (allowing for a water stop in there) instead I decided to run 2.5 mile loop there close to home, get some water, then do it one more time...

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES!  This run felt grrrreat!  Nice easy stride ... didnt wear my watch, just focused on one foot in front of the other.  Even though I didnt have my watch I know that I was going at a pretty good clip, and figured I would just keep it that way, and slow down if I felt severe fatigue coming on...which it didnt.  Dont get me wrong, my legs are indeed tired, but today they felt much better than yesterday...

Plan is to run the loop to get 2.5 miles in on my formerly known as 'rest' day in the morning before work.  I have to go in late, waiting for cable guy who is supposed to be here between 8-11, so a loop around 6:30/6:45 will work out just fine, giving me almost a full 24 hours before long run Saturday...

Does anyone use  Man its awesome!  When I got home yesterday afternoon, the cable is all jacked (meaning some of the channels arent coming in) therefore some of my favs didnt DVR...boooo!...But today on lunch, I went to and watched a couple of shows that I had missed due to cable company...however the cable is again working...but the peeps told me to still keep the appointment since this very thing has happened more than once now...

I guess if I have to go without something, being without cable is way more OK than being without air conditioning.

Its the little things right???

Its hotter than that!

Run sucked today.  Bottom line is I am just going to have to slow down to get the miles in.  Thank goodness I chose the 4 mile route over the 5 mile route today; otherwise this chick would have been walking!  Regardless of all of that, I got the 4 miles done (1 mile short; schedule called for 5) and that is that.

And day-uuuum, am I ever glad its o.v.e.r.

How I feel and think most of the time ... but this guy says it much better than I ever could...

Sorry but it FELT a whole lot hotter than that!  Wowza!  Given that I had had a semi-stressful day I opted to do 7/1's today.  With the heat on top of that I knew my HR was going to be a bit too high, and I wanted my 5 miles to count so going faster on the 7's seemed like the right thing to do.

Paces for intervals were between 9:32 and 9:55.  Good enough.  Thankfully (and on purpose) I worked the route to where my turnaround point was at the water fountain near Main/Fannin.  I sure needed that water.

I might have to start carrying that itty bitty fuel bottle on my jaunts, even though I hate carrying that thing with a passion!!!

I would like to thank the rich residents of Rice/University Place for having their sprinklers all on this afternoon, and sorry for running through some your yards and/or flower beds...but I was H.O.T.

After going off the wagon so to speak after Lent, which honestly it wasnt that I started eating meat, because I rarely have, but its more about the fact that I kinda quit being as tenacious as I was during those 46 days...I had to dig deep inside to admit that to myself, so along with the fact that I started drinking way too many Diet Cokes again, its no wonder really that the plateau happened...I know the science behind diet sodas hindering weight loss (and sometimes adding weight gain)...not to mention it makes you look 'puffy'.

So this weekend, I only had one Diet Coke each day, and I stocked back up on fruits and veggies and the like (no more meat except for special occasions or social situations where I don't have any other option)...its time to take responsibility for what really caused the plateau...its back to green monsters, overnight oats, so forth and so be honest the couple of times I have even eaten meat its still only been ground turkey, chicken, tuna (and last night I had shrimp)...and whenever I ate it twice in one day (say for lunch and dinner), I felt like total crap the next day...

This morning my weight had thankfully leveled back down to what it was (at my lowest at the plateau) ... so at least theres THAT...hopefully getting back on the vegetarian straight and narrow will be just what the doctor ordered...

We'll Be Back to our Regular Scheduled Blog Later.... :O)

I have been trying to figure out exactly how to get some of my thoughts (and frustrations) out, and I truly hesitate putting this stuff here, but I have tried the talking with someone else about it…I have one person that I feel 100% comfortable with, and thankfully they listen without giving me ‘answers’ but either commiserates, or simply shakes their head so that I know they’re listening and that they understand that I don’t necessarily want or need solutions, but I just need someone to freaking listen…anyway, as I said I hesitate to put it on here, because I don't want this blog to become more about 'life drama' but to stay on course as it pertains to: running, healthy eating, pushing the limits past the comfortable place and shooting for the stars...

but...because therein lies a portion of my frustration. People that don’t understand, and even go so far as to either try and negate what you deem as ‘important’ to you with words, and in my particular case, with their actions. I have always been of the school where either “Talk is cheap” or “Actions speak louder than words.”

And you know, while ‘talk’ can cut you to the core, make your heart bleed, and just feel all around like a loser, it’s the actions (or lack thereof) that make one cry. At least that’s the case with me.

It would appear, at least in my case, that once you stray from the ‘norm’ of the herd, you find yourself on the outside looking in.

I know that I have my ‘purist’ ideals about food, running, health…and while yes, sometimes on this blog, and on my Facebook page, I might state this to such a degree that some may might feel ‘attacked’ for their choices, but that is not my intent. Nor is it my intent to alienate anyone by ‘appearing’ to be ‘above’ anyone else…I am not saying that my choices are the end all to be all.  Believe I take issue with a lot of things, pet peeves if you will, but well...

Do I judge others for their choices? Yes, sometimes I do. But I would say that 99.9% of the time its for their own good.

Do I tell or ‘preach’ to them about it? Absolutely not.

I might put links to articles out there/on here and if you are so inclined, read the information. Take away from it what you will.

Or don’t.

I am often asked about this, that or the do I start running, how do I lose weight, how do I get long did it take you to do this, that or the other...and I love all of that...and I give advice where given and you know for the most part, I would say I see 98% interest and about 23% effort.  And thats across the board of people I know... Whatever.

Not my deal man.

But this really doesn’t have to do with any of that I don’t think; or maybe it kind of does…What I have seen transpire over the past few months is apparent, and I accept that.  It is what it is you know?

One of these things is no longer like the other(s).

And because of that, I, being the obvious ‘different’ one, whether because of my ideals, my choices, my goals as it pertains to running, my tenacity…well…anyway, I have spent way too much time ‘worrying’ about it all to be quite honest with you. I am tired of ‘pretending’ to fit in when its so clearly obvious that I no longer do.  I equate this to almost like what I heard about forgiveness once...thats important to realize that dwelling on something only hurts you, because guaranteed the other person or persons is not losing any sleep over whatever it was...and I figure thats the case here...and makes it that much more sad to me...that people dont even realize how their actions affect others...and furthermore, dont give a flying rats ass either...

But I am also still very upset at the lack of ‘taste’ or class of some…I have a few pet peeves and it would seem, in this instance, that every single one of them has been hit.

This to me is simply unacceptable. And by that I mean general consideration of ones effort should not (and will not) be just completely ignored. I find it INCREDIBLY rude, classless … you name it.

I have always prided myself on surrounding myself with like-minded people (well maybe not always but that’s another post for another blog). I believe that there is strength in numbers…and I believe that when you are around ‘good’ people then things are indeed good. It took me a while to get to this, but at least I finally got there…

But even then, there seems to be more and more of an inclination to be that ‘lone wolf’…Even some of the like-mindeds and I don’t see eye to eye on a lot of things…so there again…I seem to gravitate towards one of two things…being that ‘lone wolf’ as I said, or go to the one thing (person) that … well … that at the end of the day knows me better than anyone out there … that listens. That understands. That has never, ever judged me…there may have been times where we didn’t see eye to eye, still are I suppose…but I have to say, that regardless of any of that, it’s the one place that I feel completely myself and un-alone.

Right now, I seem to be at a crossroads (neither really good)…I am on one hand, very hurt…so much so that it surprises even me…you know because I am the ‘stoic’ one…never rattled by such things…but that is where you would be wrong…I am not that person…not even close…on the exterior…yes…sometimes…

And on the other hand, I just feel lost…but mostly I am just hurt…

I wanted (needed) to get this out…and if anyone reads it, and knows of what I am talking about, don’t bother trying to ‘fix’ anything…you can’t.

And for those that are indeed close to me, if you feel a sense of ‘pulling away’ or anything along those lines, its just me … having a bit of a rough go of it right now … I wish I could say this is the only thing that is weighing heavy on me right now, but it isnt ... its really sad, that at the end of the day, I just don't trust a whole lot of people and/or their intentions ...

It's ok though.  I have a plan in place and from here on out, if there is any doubt whatsoever about anyone 'in my life' and the reason for them being there, I will handle it the only way I know how that has worked in the past.

And I won't think twice about it either...

Saturday Long Run

Yes, KW still on hiatus, but no rest for the weary.  I sent out an email earlier in the week to see who wanted to meet up to run an easy 10 miles.  Only Amber took me up on the 7am start.  Not surprised at all.  [insert : / here] ...

At the start, temp was 72 and 91% humidity according to Weatherbug app.  Fabulous.  It actually felt worse than that to be honest.

I got there a bit early, antsy as I was (not use to sitting around so early on Saturdays) so I did a loop of JH/Washington which is just shy of 1.5 miles.  Once I got back Amber was pulling up and off we went.

Try as we might, we couldnt seem to slow down to a pace I wanted this morning (I would have rather come in at 10:30).  It took effort to pull back as often as we did.  The route (on purpose) took us by mi casa at mile 2 and mile 8 so I had cold Gatorade in the fridge for those stops.  We made the loop at Rice and with 2 water fountains (mile 4 and 5.5) the route was perfect for a non-supported Saturday run.

Mile(s) 1.5 - no data (I didnt turn the Garmin on till we started the 10 mile route
Mile 1: 10:07
Mile 2: 10:02
Mile 3: 10:10
Mile 4: 10:12
Mile 5: 10:06
Mile 6: 10:23 (yeah I walked here and didnt stop my watch; across the street to the potty :)
Mile 7: 10:13
Mile 8: 10:07
Mile 9: 10:06
Mile 10: 10:07
Total miles: 11.5
Average pace for 10 miles: 10:09

Looking at those splits now; wow.  Talk about consistency in the overall pace of each.  But as I said there were PLENTY of times we would look at our watches and think Oh shiznit...slooooooow down...there were a couple of times where I would just stop running though and walk for maybe 20-30 seconds...HR would get up there and I could 'feel' it and knowing how much further we had to go, I knew I needed it.

I got my marathon training schedule, and while in the month of May its more about just maintaining (official Chicago training doesnt start till June 5th and my longest run in May only goes to 14 miles), my running/training pace shows it needs to be between 10 and 10:15, so we're golden (for some reason in June forward it shows 10:25; maybe because of my goal time I put in on the matrix).  Obviously thats about 45 sec slower than what I hope to do on race day in October.  God willing and weather permitting :)

The only thing of note really was that I weighed before I left and when I got home.  3 lbs of lost water weight is not bad, but its not good either...I had forgotten how incredibly drenched with sweat one gets once 'Summer' hits the Bayou city....
